We have a Design Student of The Year 2012!
Raffles Hong Kong’s Student won in the Design Student of the Year 2012!
Congratulations to our Interior Design student, Shiren Ho Mei Yan, for winning the Design Student of the Year 2012 – an annual contest organized by Hong Kong Designers Association to award outstanding design students with scholarship to fulfill their dreams in design practice and broaden their views. An Award Presentation Ceremony cum Exhibition was held on 18 Nov 2012 at the Central Exhibition Area on 3/F Telford Plaza II, Kowloon Bay, where the winning designs of the 3 winners were showcased.
Shiren’s winning design, The Time Machine, is an attractive pop-up retail store designed to attract audience to a 60’s-themed exhibition and generate ticket sales. The store is constructed with drywalls in black paint and Sensitile on the sides. As the visitor walks in, segments of the exhibition items will be shown on transparent screens suspended from the ceiling. The transparent screens can be slid forward to create a door when the store is closed. With contrasting construction materials, exaggerated lighting and sparkling reflections, the Time Machine generate curiosity for visitors by allowing them to get a glimpse of the exhibition.
“The project reflects Shiren’s interest for engaging the user and provoking interaction with her designs.” said Mr. Victor Serrano, Raffles’ Interior Design Lecturer, who nominated and encouraged Shiren to participate in the contest, “Shiren is a very dedicated designer who approaches every design problem with great curiosity.”
“Victor is truly a great mentor!” Shiren also appreciated Victor for his encouragement in the contest, “At first I wasn’t so keen on joining because I lacked confidence in my portfolio and I’ve already been working at that time. Victor encouraged me and offered to help fine-tuning my portfolio.” With Victor’s help and support, Shiren has learnt a lot during the process, “His suggestions were always very helpful and he would give details and references for me to study by myself. I really appreciate his patience.”
Shiren just graduated from Raffles in July this year. Being an explorative designer, she is planning to use the winning scholarship for an immersion trip to Mainland China which is a growing market especially for Hong Kong designers. “It would be an eye-opening experience to visit the booming art and design scenes, furniture factories and join some industry events in China,” said Shiren.
Go Shiren! We wish you all the best for your future endeavors!
